While the British government claims to reprimand Bahraini rulers for human rights violations, it is actually engaged in providing the repressive regime with arms to crush peaceful protests, an analyst said.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - “The sale of small arms, rifles, ammunition, and machine guns to repressive, autocratic regimes, particularly to Bahrain, is an example of the dirty hypocrisy, slimy deceit, and straightforward lying of the British government,” said Rodney Shakespeare, chairman of the Committee against Torture in Bahrain, in an interview said on Wednesday.

“I can say that confidently because I wrote to the (British) foreign office, protesting that it was doing nothing against the torture and the shootings in Bahrain. I received a letter, in which they said 'we are trying to uphold human rights, and we are doing it behind the scenes,'” Shakespeare added.

“Notice that they are not doing it publicly and here we now have the clearest evidence that at the same time that they are claiming to reprimand the Bahrain government for breaches of human rights, they are actually selling them arms,” he further explained.

The British authorities are “putting out lies to me in writing and of course they are doing it to everybody else in words. They are deceitful, they are lying, and they are hypocrites,” Shakespeare concluded.

Thousands of protesters in Bahrain have been holding peaceful anti-government demonstrations since mid-February, demanding an end to the rule of the Al Khalifa dynasty in the tiny Persian Gulf sheikdom.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned on Tuesday that the situation in Bahrain remains “tense and unpredictable” as the Manama regime continues its brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.
